The Range Stormer concept (Detroit Motor Show 2004) previewed Land Rover's intentions: to take on the Porsche Cayenne and the new breed of top-end, road-focused sporting SUVs. It came to production little changed, a lower-slung three-door, fastback version of the Range Rover with its own distinct character. This thing looks mean, especially in black.
Despite the 'Range Rover' tag, the Sport actually shares most of its underpinnings with the Discovery 3. Developed with an emphasis on road performance, it can still venture off-track, but in truth, few Range Rover Sports will ever be used to their full off-road capabilities. One of the most capable all-rounders of any type, the Sport is heavy and bulky, but it isn't half fast - especially with the supercharged 4.2 V8 engine, or the TDV8 diesel. A 5.0-litre V8 is thought to be on the way.
