Smart, urban-oriented but still immensely capable off-road, the 'Landie' LRX was first shown in concept form at the Detroit Motor Show in January 2008. Land Rover's new owners Tata are said to be fully committed to bringing it to production, and its development continues.
The production range will probably be offered with conventional powertrains, but the diesel-electric hybrid of the concept will come too; this promises 120g/km. But most crucially, its Gerry McGovern-designed exterior has as much presence as the Range Rover Sport's, and its cabin will come with upholstery, gadgets and gizmos to please the most discerning of luxury car buyers. The LRX is a scaled-down premium product with all the Range Rover's amenities in a compact package: it's a Land Rover for the 21st century, and should prove highly desirable.
