Motor Show: Detroit 2008: Saab 9-4X

15 Jan 08

The much-anticipated Saab 9-4X crossover has been revealed at last and, as expected, this initial concept has a bioethanol-compatible Biopower engine.

A compact crossover with four-wheel-drive, the 9-4X features a version of the familiar turbocharged four-cylinder, 2.0-litre Saab engine, here developed for 245bhp and 260 lb ft. When running on E85 fuel this output is upped to 300bhp/295 lb ft.

The four-wheel-drive system is similar to that of the recently-launched 9-3 XWD, with a central differential directing drive between the front and rear axles, plus a rear differential to split drive between each of the rear wheels. Such a system should be more than adequate for most SUV buyers' needs and is well-suited to a crossover-type vehicle like this which will rarely - if ever - need to go off-road at all.

Reports suggest that production is scheduled for later this year at a General Motors plant in Mexico, where the 9-4X will be built alongside the Cadillac BRX (production follow-up to the Provoq, we believe, albeit without that concept's fuel cell powertrain). It'll have a very different character to the BRX, however, with plainer, less cluttered exterior and interior design.

'This concept is a clear statement of what our brand is about', says Saab MD Jan Ake Jonsson. 'It is also an important next step in our plans to enter new market segments with distinctive product offerings.'

Designed by Anthony Lo and his team at the General Motors Europe studio, in partnership with Saab's Swedish Brand Centre, the 9-4X has clearly been influenced by the earlier Aero X concept. 'We focused on incorporating design themes from the Aero X in a crossover execution', said Lo, 'adding functional, lifestyle features to support the activities of customers using this type of vehicle.'

These touches include a ski equipment stowage system developed in co-operation with Saloman, with sliding load-bay floor, boot stowage compartments, a rubber liner and ski/ski pole slots, plus an altimeter-style speedo and other aircraft-inspired details, and a panoramic glass roof.
