On sale in Japan already, and due to reach the UK in the spring, the Evo X has been more heavily previewed than any car in history. But that doesn't stop it being one of the most exciting prospects of 2008.
Mitsubishi has confirmed that the new turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine makes 295bhp and does not attempt to deny that more powerful upgrades will follow. It also makes 300lb-ft of torque.
Mitsubishi's new six-speed twin-clutch SST (Sport Shift Transmission) automated gearbox is on offer as an alternative to the five-speed manual familiar from the Evo IX. Both gearboxes come with electronically controlled four-wheel drive.
Two models are offered: the well-kitted GSR and the stripped-out RS, available with the manual gearbox only, which has no radio, no spoiler, no electrically operated seats and reduced interior trim to save weight. Seats are by Recaro.
