Skoda has launched its new-generation Fabia estate at Frankfurt. Like the latest Fabia hatch, it's larger and roomier than its predecessor. Boot space is up 54 litres to 480 litres, with a total capacity of 1,460 litres when the rear seats are folded flat. There's an abundance of storage trays, cubbyholes and hooks, and a roller load area cover.
Engine choices are 1.2, 1.4 and 1.6 petrol units, and 1.4 (70bhp and 80bhp) and 1.9 diesels. The 1.6 petrol has the option of a six-speed Tiptronic gearbox.
Skoda is also showing a Fabia Estate Scout concept car, with SUV-alike styling: fat bumpers, body mouldings and raised ground clearance, as with the Octavia and Roomster Scout models, although like the Roomster it will be two-wheel-drive only.
Skoda's third new car is a 'design study' - very close to production - called Fabia Greenline, based on the Fabia hatch. The Greenline is a low-consumption, low-emissions variant of the Fabia, Skoda's equivalent of the Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion and Seat Ibiza Ecomotion. It'll do 69mpg with a carbon dioxide output of just 110g/km, achieved by a combination of aerodynamic enhancements, weight savings and modifications including economy-biased gear ratios.
