Volvo C30 Efficiency
Volvo is showing a low-emissions, low-consumption version of its C30 hatchback. The C30 Efficiency comes with a 105bhp 1.6-litre diesel engine, slicker aerodynamics, lower rolling resistance and a higher-geared transmission, all to make it greener.
It rides lower on new 16" wheels with low-friction tyres, and gains a rear roof spoiler, reshaped rear bumper and new underbody panels. The engine cooling, steering assistance and engine management systems have been revised, and it uses different transmission oil.
The C30 Efficiency returns 62.8mpg and emits less than 120 g/km of carbon dioxide - putting it in the UK's band B for road tax, currently £40 a year. Like the Audi A3 1.9 TDI and Volkswagen Golf BlueMotion also announced recently, it will be exempt from the London congestion charge when the criteria are revised next year.
Volvo C30 Efficiency
Volvo has also announced a new automatic transmission system called Powershift, which will be fitted with the new 2.0-litre diesel engine in the C30, S40 and V50 ranges. It's a twin-clutch system - similar to the Volkswagen DSG - and is claimed to offer quicker gearchanges and greater fuel efficiency.
