Volkswagen Golf BlueMotion
First the Polo, now the Golf: Volkswagen has revealed a new model with BlueMotion fuel-saving tweaks. This Golf does 62.8mpg and emits just 119g/km of carbon dioxide.
The Golf BlueMotion is powered by a 105bhp/184lb-ft version of the 1.9-litre diesel engine, and is capable of around 750 miles on one 55-litre tank of fuel. As with the Polo BlueMotion, the gearbox is modified with taller third, fourth and fifth ratios, while its engine management is revised for a lower idling speed.

The low-emission tweaks, which drop the Golf into the £35-a-year tax bracket, also include a particulate filter and a flush radiator grille for improved aerodynamics. The underbody has been smoothed out and the car comes fitted with low rolling-resistance, high-pressure tyres. It actually goes a bit faster than the standard 1.9 TDI Golf - top speed is upped to 118mph - and sports suspension is standard.
Full pricing and specification for the UK haven't yet been announced, but the Golf BlueMotion will be offered in Germany from the end of this year, costing around £200 more than the standard 1.9 TDI. Right-hand-drive versions will go on sale in the UK in early 2008.
