Motor Show: Frankfurt 2007: Renault Kangoo Compact Concept

11 Sep 07

Renault is launching its Mk2 Kangoo, a successful utility compact MPV.

This new-generation model is 180mm longer than its predecessor, with a better-quality cabin, improved sound-proofing and higher equipment levels all making it less van-like than before. A five-seater, the Kangoo can carry up to 2866 litres of cargo, thanks to split/flat-folding rear seats, and it can accommodate objects up to 2.5m long. It now has 77 litres of extra stowage space, including aircraft-type overhead lockers. Its roof bars can convert into a luggage rack and carry a further 80kg.

Engine options for the new Kangoo include two petrol units, but the best choice will be the diesel: the economical 1.5 dCi engine will come in 105bhp, 85bhp and 70bhp forms, the most powerful version also having a particulate filter. Equipment will include between two and six airbags, seatbelts with pretensioners and load limiters, and depending on version, up to three ISOFIX child seat mounting points, stability control, traction control, cruise control with speed limiter, automatic headlamps and automatic wipers.

Drawing attention to all this is the bright orange-painted Kangoo Compact Concept, with its brushed aluminium tail end, LED headlights and blue-spoked 19-inch aluminium wheels. Developed in partnership with skate firm Rollerblade, it has had its ride height raised by 200mm and its glazed roof cut away to create a lift-out section; its rear screen slides down for a near-convertible experience.

Shorter than the production Kangoo with a three-door structure, it's a four-seater with its cabin finished off in blue leather and grey mesh fabric, with orange detailing and transparent anti-slip silicone materials for the dash and steering wheel. The tailgate has a lower panel which folds out to either 45 or 90 degrees, said to be handy for sitting on when putting on rollerskates. The skate theme continues with seat-height adjustors which look like skate wheels. The rear bench seat can swivel by up to 180 degrees - passengers can get in through the rear - and it all looks rather practical. This is very much a motor show concept car, but it hints very strongly that Renault is considering a three-door, more compact Kangoo.
