4: Mitsubishi Shogun Pinin (2000-2005)
Mitsubishi Shogun Pinin
Mitsubishi distilled all the virtues of its original Shogun into a smaller package for the Pinin, named to highlight its styling by Pininfarina. With selectable two- and four-wheel drive, high- and low-ratio gears and a central locking differential, it's the real deal when it comes to off-roading. And while it's rather crude on road and it cabins is cramped, it's certainly more comfortable than its closest rival, the Suzuki Vitara.
There's no diesel engine but the petrols are both reasonably economical. It's well built and reliable, and a popular secondhand purchase - which is why used prices remain on the high side, for three- and five-door bodies. A decent investment, though.
