2. BMW 7-Series
An all-new, much made-over 7-Series has just gone on sale in the UK. It's a little more conservative-looking than its controversial predecessor, but still striking and far from dull. It's lighter and more powerful, more economical and sharper to drive, with an array of new technology, and is thoroughly impressive all-round.
BMW's Efficient Dynamics package - including brake energy regeneration and low rolling-resistance tyres - makes some impact, though you'll still be wanting the 3.0 diesel (39.2mpg and 192g/km, in tax band F). Residual (resale) values will be strongest for the diesel, too.
As it's so new, there aren't huge discounts around just yet, but independent brokers may be able to save you up to £3000.
3. Jaguar XJ
Want to buy British? Abandon that Bentley Arnage and consider the more modest Jaguar XJ, another homegrown classic in a great tradition.
The modern-day XJ is true to the 1968 original, but a lot cleaner and greener. Pick of the engines is the 2.7 V6 diesel, good for 35mpg and 214g/km (Band F tax), and in no way compromising the Jaguar ideals of grace, space and pace.
Superbly refined, well-equipped and enjoying surprisingly good residual (resale) values, the XJ TDVi is a very viable real-world option which stacks up well against the best of the luxury-car opposition.
Build quality and reliability is much better than it used to be, and under the ownership of India's Tata Motors, Jaguar is continuing to develop and progress. Sales are slowing, though and this is reflected in some of the deals around. Independent agents can source an XJ TDVi with savings of almost £12,000 off list price, depending on version. How about a Sovereign for less than £40,000?
