2. Ford Fiesta
Ford has scored again with its all-new Fiesta and it's a marked improvement on its predecessor. Setting a new standard in the class, it's a great all-rounder, falling down only on its slightly compromised versatility (the rear seat doesn't fold flat).
Quiet, refined, comfortable and fun to drive, the lightweight Fiesta comes with a series of economical engines including the super-thrifty 1.4 and 1.6 TDCi diesels (67.3mpg and 110g/km). The specially-modified 1.6 TDCi Econetic delivers 76.3mpg and 98g/km, meaning Band A (free) road tax. The petrols are economical as well, Ford servicing and maintenance costs are as low as they come and some models qualify for Group 1 insurance.
What's not to like? Well, as it's only just gone on sale, there are no massive savings as yet, though independent brokers are offering 15% off (over £1000 in most cases), and if the downturn continues, there may be some even more attractive deals...
3. Mitsubishi Colt
One of the more underrated cars in this class, the Dutch-built Colt comes up cheap. Ex-demo and delivery-mileage examples are plentiful at less than £6,000, and these 2008 Colts will get cheaper yet when the revised Colt arrives at the end of the year.
Roomy to ride in, with a well-designed cockpit and lots of headroom, the Colt is comfy and lively to drive. The 1.1-litre petrol engine is perfectly adequate, and this returns an excellent 49.6mpg. It's classed in insurance group 3, road tax is Band C - and with its good reputation for reliability, residual (resale) values are very strong.
The upcoming new-look Colt is to get a Lancer-style grille, an upgraded interior and more boot-space. From next spring, there will also be special economy-optimised versions with stop-start technology.
