Need for Speed: Undercover

Got a bit of spare cash left over from Christmas? Not spending it on something frivolous like heating your hovel as you try to find a new job? Then make it a happy New Year by splashing out on a sexy new racing game.

We have picked nine of the most interesting for your consideration, spanning all the gaming platforms and ranging from underground street-racing to off-roading on quad bikes. For each game we have indicated the rough price, but shop around - you never know, you may be able to pick up the lot from Woolies for 94p.

Need for Speed: Undercover

Platform: PSP, DS, Wii, PC, Xbox 360, PS2, PS3
Price: about £35

The Need for Speed games have been around longer than you've been alive. That is, providing you're less than 12 years old. The series has been stuck on a street-racing theme ever since NFS: Underground, but Undercover stirs things up by casting the player as an undercover policeman, sent to break a car-smuggling ring.

But it's mostly business as usual. There seem to be more cops than in previous games and it can get tedious when you manage to shake one off, only to run straight into several more. And the catch-up feature, designed to make the races closer, is more annoying than exciting.
