Feature: New Year, new car 2009

01 Dec 08

3. Ford Ka

The new-generation Ford Ka is perhaps not as fashionable as the main rival Fiat 500, but it's more fun to drive. It comes with a pair of Fiat-sourced engines (1.2 68bhp petrol and 1.3 75bhp Multijet diesel) but has a unique suspension layout, giving both great grip on the road and much-improved ride comfort.

The Ka's a charming city runabout, though it is strictly a four-seater, without much rear leg- and headroom. It can't compare with the 500 in terms of equipment levels - side and curtain airbags, electric windows, remote central locking and air conditioning are all extra-cost upgrades pushing up the price from the entry-level £7,995 - but it is a very attractive all-round package with plenty of scope for personalisation.

4. Hyundai i20

Hyundai shook up the city car sector with its super-cheap but well-equipped i10, and now it plans to do the same with the i20, which replaces the Getz supermini early next year.

The i20 has a longer wheelbase and roomier interior than the Getz, but maintains similar exterior dimensions. It will have all-new engines: the super-economical 1.2 (75bhp) petrol and a 90bhp 1.4 diesel. A specially-modified low-emissions, high-economy version of the diesel will be offered, badged i20 i-blue; this will return 68mpg and emit just 99g/km of carbon dioxide (thus rendering tax-free in Band A), thanks to improved underbody aerodynamics, a ride lowered by 15mm, low-friction engine oil and low rolling-resistance tyres.

The final clincher in Hyundai's high-value proposition may well be the company's comprehensive five-year, unlimited mileage warranty.
