2. Citroen C8/Peugeot 807

C4 Picasso not big enough? The whopping great Citroen C8 - and Peugeot 807 sister model - are both huge, cheap and regularly come with large discounts. Some recent deals include independent brokers offering a staggering £5,000 off the list price.

The 2.0 HDI diesel is the pick of the range, although the 2.2 HDI comes with a desirable automatic gearbox as standard. The C8/807 has suffered some reliability glitches, particularly with its power-sliding side doors, but with the full manufacturers' warranty at least you won't foot the bill when things go wrong.

3. Ford Galaxy/S-Max

Think of the Ford Galaxy as the sensible one with its higher roof and softer ride, with the S-Max its sportier and stylish cousin, designed to appeal to a family of car enthusiasts.

Either way, both come with a five-star Euro NCAP crash test rating and good 1.8, 2.0 and 2.2 TDCi diesel engines. The turbocharged 2.5-litre petrol, meanwhile, is straight from the Focus ST and great fun - but it's thirsty.

Unfortunately, they have something else in common - they are both more expensive than most rival models. Don't be put off, though: hunt around and there are serious discounts to be had, particularly on the Galaxy. If you're really lucky you might even find a new one with delivery mileage for just £15,000 -that's astonishing value.
