The media all agree: diesel is roundly beating petrol as the fuel to both beat the credit crunch and save the planet.
However, our recent investigation into the real world fuel economy of the latest eco-cars did reveal two facts that made us think hard about whether petrol might not be the better fuel to choose - both for the pocket and the environment.
The first isn't a secret: diesel is much more expensive - currently around 11% more than petrol.
But the second is much less well known.
