'Today's motoring climate would seem to be totally against the driver who still enjoys the style and exhilaration of sporting motoring. Petrol shortages and spiralling prices. Less road space, especially in urban areas'.
An editorial piece today? Nope, Volkswagen's 1977 sales brochure for the original Scirocco.
The Scirocco comes back in 2008 to a similar backdrop of rising fuel prices, strike action, impending recession and general economic doom and gloom as in the late 70s.
The electricity hasn't gone out - yet - but we may be headed for another winter of discontent.
But thank the heavens for cars like this: 'The Volkswagen Scirocco fits right in with both sets of criteria: the sporting and the sensible,' said VW in 1977. 'Its overall dimensions are compact. Yet it carries four in comfort and doubles as a credible load-carrier. It gives sheer driving enjoyment on the open road and on the tight twisty lane. Yet it makes no undue demands on petrol consumption.'
All of which could apply to the 2008 edition.
