If your dad likes a bit of virtual driving as well as the real thing, there are a couple of new driving games he might want to try.

The first is the eagerly anticipated Gran Turismo 5 Prologue. Now although it is, in many ways, little more than an extended interactive promo for the full game (due in 2009), it would be wrong to dismiss GT5P: after all the Gran Turismo franchise has done pretty well since the launch of the first game in 1997. It provides an unmatched driving experience, with hugely impressive graphics and great sound effects.

Super Mario Kart, although just as popular, is a completely different proposition. Nintendo has managed to design a game that, while easy to play, doesn't insult anyone's intelligence. It's more chaotic than previous Super Mario Karts, but it's still possible for gamers of all ages to have loads of fun while playing it. And, if you buy your dad a copy, it has the added advantage of giving you a good chance of beating him at something.

Of course, if your dad prefers something a bit more hands-on, there's always Scalextric. Sets start at £40 for the basic Start! kit and you can always add more cars or extra track. Your mum might not be happy about losing the living room floor, and you'll see a whole new competitive streak in your dad, but it will definitely fall into the category of 'hours of fun for all the family'.

If your dad's a bit of a gadget freak, you'll have lots of scope for car-related gifts this Father's Day. There are a number of websites selling just stuff for petrolheads, such as Me and My Car and Car Crazy Gifts, with products offer such as a Ferrari Weather Station that features an alarm clock and temperature and humidity readings, a desktop tape dispenser in the shape of a brake calliper, a racing wheel dumbbell, along with all kinds of art prints, cards, and knick-knacks for dad's desk at the office.
