Cutting through Bath and then brushing Wells and Glastonbury before joining the A30, the end of our journey approached. It was time to crunch the figures and count the cost.
When we finally reached Land's End the trip computer read an incredible 1,433 miles - almost 600 miles more than the 834 miles a route planner estimates by taking the trip using motorways.
Fuel consumption, according to the computer, was 27.7mpg for the trip total. The reality was we actually averaged just over 26mpg, some way off the claimed 34.0mpg, but still an astonishing result for a big 4x4 driven hard and through plenty towns, roundabouts and traffic lights.
By the time we crunched away into the UK's most southerly car park and had wandered around the gaudy theme-park-like attractions, it was difficult to comprehend what we had achieved over just two and a half days. Mentally and physically drained, the details of the journey were still vivid.
Weird, because the last time I did the same route via the motorway I didn't remember a thing.
