Feature: Summer drives: I'll take the slow road

By: John Mahoney

Since we did the 'Lakes' we thought we might as well pop into the peak district and compare notes.

More BMW X6 attention, this time not so positive. As we overtake a dawdling Audi A4 Convertible the driver presents his middle index finger - is it our driving, or the car?

Things remain uneventful until we round a corner to see a Honda HR-V sitting in a field on its roof, speared by a gatepost. Fearing the worst, we pull over and run back to the field to help.

There we find the driver, unharmed, perched on coolbox, attempting to light a cigarette. The former policewoman says she can't find her mobile phone and that a patch of gravel might have caused the automotive acrobatics. As other people begin stopping she declares she 'loves being the centre of attention'. A look in the upturned car reveals how lucky she has been. The fence post that had impaled the Honda was just a few centimetres away from the headrest. 'Can you see if my phone's in there?' she says to man on his hands and knees scooping out her belongings from the wrecked Honda.

The local farmer arrives and is less than impressed. He tells us that about five or six drivers meet a similar fate on this bend each year and that he's rarely paid for the damage to his fence.

We press on until we arrive in Warrington at a Holiday Inn. That evening we ate at the 'world famous' pub carvery next door.

I had a salad.
