Road trips used to be a great way to ease the stresses and strains of modern life - life on the open road an' all that.
Then the Germans invented the motorway.
Driving became a means to an end - something to endure rather than savour - so when we faced the prospect of journeying the length of mainland Britain we thought we'd rewind to the 1950s and pretend miserable motorways had never been invented.
To spice things up even further we thought we'd test a car that people still have yet to fathom - the BMW X6. Is it a 4x4? Is it a coupe? Answers on a postcard please.
Road test editor John Mahoney took up the challenge with photographer Phil Moore. We gave them some rubbish music to listen to, a list of overnight stopovers to choose from and outbound tickets to Wick airport.
