His chance to put what he's learned in practice came at the first rounds at Snetterton. Allison spoke to 4Car after his first race about his first impressions, embarking on a new career and fulfilling a life-long dream.

'I was nervous before getting on the grid, which wasn't helped by a 10-minute delay,' he said. 'But once I got the first lap out of the way, I was perfectly calm and started having fun watching everything going on around me and looking for my lines.'

So how did he do in his first-ever competitive race? Only a highly impressive fifth?

'The team's pleased and I'm delighted,' added Allison. 'The car's in one piece and there are no marks on it.'

On the experience of driving in a full competitive race for the first time, Allison said: 'The experience was like nothing I've ever had before. It's a completely different ball game even from the final of the VXR Driver of the Year.'

So what advice does he have for anyone taking part in this year's competition?

'For the finalists, what I'd say is listen to the instructors and, most of all, enjoy it. Give it 100%, but enjoy it.'
