Instantaction.com is a new online hub with a growing catalogue of games with a multiplayer emphasis. You need to sign up - which is free - but once you have a login, you can play most of it without restriction.
The best game available at present is Marble Blast Online. We admit that it barely falls under the remit of driving games - it's about marbles after all - but the site describes it as a racing platformer, which is good enough for us.
The racing element comes in because you're, ahem, driving your marble around an abstract 3-D landscape of ramps and towers, chasing after gems that appear in random clusters before your spherical rivals get there first. Control requires both mouse and keyboard, but it's fairly intuitive and you'll be turning on a dime in no time.
Even the single-player missions are fun, focusing on your marble-rolling skills rather than frantic bombing about. It's a great teacher for easing you into the multiplayer gaming.
Once you get bored of that, hop on over to the Think Tanks on the same site. It's not quite so addictive, but you get to blow things up. Hooray!
