Ooh, this was frustrating at first. No choice of track, no choice of mode, just start racing on the Desert Arena and lump it... and then you crash into a billboard on the first corner. No wonder the user reviews on the shockwave.com site say this game sucks on toast.

But this impatient flouncing is their loss. It's easy to pick up once you persevere through a couple of races and grow used to the grippy tyres and hairpin bends; remember you're controlling a monster truck on a dirt track, not chucking a GT-R around the Nurburgring in a rakishly high gear.

OverSize has four attractive tracks and you play each track four times to form a championship. Each of these races has a different goal: straight race, time trial, reverse race and a punishing checkpoint-collecting trial. Your position in each race determines your points tally in the championship. Get enough points and you move onto a new championship played on a fresh track.

Power-ups abound, and the blue one is essential for keeping your nitro bar topped up. Watch out for the purple one that saps your rivals' power - the computer drivers can use it too, and to be strangled by the purple power-up of doom while already in last place is a pain in the backside.

OverSize can be frustrating, yes. But stick with it, it is fun.

Controls
Arrow keys to drive, plus space to use nitro, R to recover after a crash, and F to flip the vehicle.

Tips
The moment you get into any kind of jam, don't spend ages trying to extract yourself. Hit the recovery key immediately and you'll be ready to rock.
