Twisted Metal has a fond place in my heart. From the early days of the first PlayStation, it consisted of throwing madcap vehicles around exaggerated landscapes and shooting missiles at one another. It was silly but it was fun.
Metal Mayhem is a direct descendant with its large 3D arenas, missiles, a handful of opposition cars and a healthy disregard to physics. You are one of four cars intent on destroying one another - chip away at them using your guns, or pick up missiles for more damaging attacks.
There are three arenas, two of which are unlocked by winning the previous arena. Once you have a victory or two under your belt, you will have enough money to upgrade your arsenal, although not everything is that useful - the weird catapulty thing that has to be aimed at a precise spot in the distance is, quite frankly, rubbish.
The arenas are a little simplistic, and the ease with which you drift and slide means the exciting face-offs you expect are often reduced to the two cars spinning uselessly around one another. But if you don't mind having to work for your upgrades and new arenas, Metal Mayhem is a blast.
Controls:
Arrow keys to drive. Z to change weapon, X to drift and C to fire selected weapon.
Tips:
The opposition has a variety of defences, and if you get too close you may get a nasty surprise... No worries, though, red First Aid boxes are littered around the landscape.
