3. Ford Focus Estate
A proper compact estate in the traditional mould: square-backed boot, folding rear seats and a series of economical engines to choose from. Yet it's a Focus, and therefore fun to drive and comfortable as well.
Two adults or tall teenagers can fit in the back, there's plenty of loadspace, and as a Ford, it's affordable to buy (if not as good value new as it used to be) and cheap to run.
There's a huge variety of engines and trim levels to choose from - including 170bhp ST170 versions.
Best avoid the noisy, slow early diesel models - the entry-level petrol engines are more than adequately strong and economical enough - but really, there should be a Focus to suit anyone.
