1. Chevrolet Lacetti Station Wagon
A no-nonsense, no-frills small family car with a decent-sized boot and good rear legroom, the Lacetti is rather old-tech and can be crude and noisy - but it's a great value second-hand buy.
Barely-used two-year old cars are a third of their original new list price, and most come with the necessary equipment: air conditioning, electric windows, a CD player and so on, if not the desirable stuff like sat nav (get a Tom Tom).
If you're not particularly brand-conscious, then the Lacetti is well worth a look. For a real budget buy, check out the earlier Daewoo-badged models: perfectly decent well cared-for, low-mileage examples are on sale for real old-banger prices.
