8. Mercedes S-Class (1999-2006)

'Still the best luxury saloon in the world,' we wrote of the W220 some years back and we still have immense admiration for this superbly-engineered car. Newer rivals may have arrived, and the current W221-series (launched 2005) may have ever-more impressive lists of safety kit and high-tech gadgets, but this is nonetheless very fine indeed by any standards.

Choose from any of the strong V6 and more mainstream V8 engines (the supercharged S55 AMG and 6.0 V12 are hardly sensible choices) and you can't go wrong. Most versions have very high equipment levels and leather upholstery, as this is the very definition of luxury saloon.
