5. Lexus LS (1990-2000)
The original LS400 took Toyota into new territory - and succeeded. It may not carry quite the same status as a Merc, but the Lexus brand made its name with this car, bolstered by superb reliability and even better customer service. The earliest examples are now banger money, but apart from general wear and tear (inevitable given the mileages these do) they are still proving solid: the only problem is that, given their trouble-free reputation, some owners have been tempted to skip services and skimp on maintenance.
Lexus LS
Ten grand buys the best of the first-generation models; revisions in 1995 brought a more powerful (280bhp) engine and a stretched wheelbase, and the 1998 overhaul saw a front-end restyle, improved suspension and the addition of satellite navigation, traction and stability control to the already-extensive standard specification. The late 90s models don't look too different to the Mk2 LS430 either.
