The stealth-wealth A8 is for those who like their luxury understated; its lack of flashiness has long endeared it to celebs who don't want to draw attention to themselves and heads of industry who don't want to look as if they're spending too much of their shareholders' money.

High-tech in its day with its all-aluminium construction, the A8's a surprisingly sporty drive thanks to its light weight, even with the entry-level V6 engine, and most models have Quattro four-wheel-drive. The engine range varies from the 193bhp 2.8 to the 4.2 V8s - 300, 310, 340 and 360bhp, depending on year/model, with the more driver-focused S8s the quickest - although the 2.8 is perfectly adequate for most tastes.
