2. Fiat Panda (2004-)
We're getting used to the plain-Jane looks now and the reborn, award-winning Panda (launched 2004) is much-loved by its owners.
It's amusing to drive, practical and unpretentious, surprisingly roomy, given its modest exterior dimensions, and very easy to own. Cheap to run, it's now getting cheaper to buy as well, although you won't find one of the super-economical 1.3 Multijet diesels - or the 4x4 or sporty 100HP - for less than £3,000 for a while yet.

Still, both 1.1 and 1.2 petrol models are lively and fuel-efficient, but bear in mind that the early 1.1 only came with the basic Active trim and no ABS anti-lock brakes.
Feedback so far on its reliability is generally good and as it's fairly low-tech, it should be simple to maintain.
