1. Citroen C2 (2003-)
Far more fun than the bulbous, bloated C3, the C2 (replacement for the popular Saxo) is a great little car.
Nippy - even with the super-economical 1.1-litre engine - and narrow, it's ideal for zipping around town, but it can more than hold its own on the motorway too. It's not one for a growing family, or if you need to carry large items in the boot, but if you rarely use your rear seats (or your mates don't mind squashing in) then it should be adequate for most needs.

Insurance is relatively cheap for the non-GT and VTS versions (Citroen gave a year's free insurance with new ones, which is why so many went to young drivers) and it's tax is low, too. The diesels will qualify for exemption from the London congestion charge (after the 2008 changes). Avoid the horrid SensoDrive auto gearbox, however.
