9. Renault Clio (2001-05)
Arguably the poshest supermini around, apart from the Volkswagen Polo, the 2001-05 Clio II continued Renault's run of success in this class.
It's roomy, with good rear legroom and a big boot, and comfortable to ride in - Renault makes great big soft armchair-like seats, which suit the soft suspension. The Clio's a car to cruise around in, not for hurtling about hot-hatch style.

The Clio II scored a very creditable four stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests and there are high levels of safety equipment. Do make sure its bonnet latch has been checked by a Renault dealer, though, as there have been well-publicised stories of Clio bonnets flying open at speed and obscuring the driver's vision.
