7. Saab 9-3 (1998-2003)
The 9-3 Convertible has long been a best-seller in Britain and while you're not yet likely to find a decent new-shape one (from 2003) for less than £10,000, there are plenty of these good-looking previous-generation models to choose from. Prices start from around £3,000 for an early non-turbo and gutless, 2.0i: but pay a little more and you can get the full turbocharged experience - the full-fat 185bhp version comes in from just £5,000.
The HOT (High Output turbo) lives up to its initials, whilst the 230bhp Viggen is just nuts - given the inherent tendency for body-flexing and general wobbliness, it's only for the brave. Look out, however, for cars with the well-respected Abbott Racing suspension and steering modifications, which bring the front wheel-scrabble and torque-steer under control, enhancing the handling no end.
OK, under that sleek Swedish body shell is a Vauxhall Cavalier, so this 9-3 is not as authentically Saab as the old wedge-shaped 900, and it's also feeling, understandably, less than state-of-the-art these days. But who cares, with such turbo power and Scandinavian style?
