6. Renault Megane Coupe-Cabriolet (2003-)

The Renault Megane coupe-convertible is one of the better-looking examples of the genre: though still a little dumpy to the rear end (those folding hard-tops need a lot of space to stow away into) it's better-proportioned than many, its looks enhanced roof-up by glass panels.

Renault Megane Coupe-Cabriolet

Don't mistake the Megane for a sports car - it's far too heavy and ponderous for that. Best think of it as a compact luxury cabriolet: it is solid-feeling, with good sound-proofing and a high level of refinement, as well as excellent seats and high equipment levels. We're not so keen on the Renault Card keyless entry/ignition system, however - an innovation too far.

Top marks to Renault too for its excellent safety engineering: like the Megane hatchback, this coupe-cabriolet has achieved a full five-star result in the Euro NCAP crash tests and it's kitted out with the full range of modern-day crash-protecting technologies.
