10. Volvo C70 (1999-2005)

The first-generation C70 has been much-maligned for its scuttle shake, poor (for a Volvo) build quality and its tendency towards unruly handling if driven hard. No matter: it had its fans, and second-hand, it's now looking more attractive - prices have come down a lot since the launch of the all-new, much-improved latest model with folding hard-top.

If torque-steer amuses you, try a T5; if not, take it easy in a less powerfully-turbocharged 2.0T. The GT pack - climate control, cruise control, traction control, leather upholstery, heated front seats, uprated speaker CD/radio - was pretty much a must-have option when new, so most come very well-equipped. And as most C70 convertibles were bought by sensible, professional middle-aged (and older) women, they make relatively safe second-hand buys - unless they've changed hands a few times by now and since received the boy-racer treatment - there's potential for hooligan behaviour with one of these.
