Subaru Legacy

Subaru's four-wheel-drive Legacy estate is much-loved by the country set: it's ideal for trailer-towing and dog-carrying, it goes on forever and it looks great accessorised with mud and farm filth. Outback models have raised suspension and extra body cladding, but the plain-clothes versions work well too.

The Legacy is well-known for reaching 200,000 miles-plus, and working hard for most of them, although parts and maintenance can be dear.

Be careful, though: as with old Saabs, people tend to hang on to Legacies long-term, only selling them on when they no longer look viable.
