Saab 9-5 Estate

In practice, finding a good second-hand Saab is difficult, as anyone who's got one tends to hang onto it until it reaches the end of its (long) serviceable life.

But it's worth persevering, or paying the prices asked on Saab dealer/specialist forecourts: the 9-5 estate ranks up there near the Volvos as a posh family vehicle.

Solidly-built and smartly-styled, the 9-5 is generally reliable, though we'd steer clear of the ropey (GM) 3.0 V6 diesel, which eats clutches and tyres and is no great drive anyway. There's a very distinctive feel to driving a Saab and the 9-5 has plenty of character, despite sharing many of its components with the Vectra.
