Older Peugeots are now available for peanuts and the 406 is at the classier end of bangerdom.

The 1999 revisions were particularly successful, although it's not as sharp-looking as the new 407 and does now look a bit dated. It's a good drive, though, and thoroughly pleasant to ride in. Some versions are a bit basic and under-powered, but there's enough to choose from - even a turbo 2.0 and a 3.0 V6, if you're brave.

The diesels are the most popular second-hand buys, so are more expensive than petrol models; consider a petrol if you don't do a high mileage.

The Family seven-seaters are in demand, too, although we wouldn't recommend using the rear-facing third row - its occupants are immensely vulnerable in the event of a rear-end impact.
