The A6 picked up where the 100 - now very cheap indeed - left off, coming up cheaper second-hand model-for-comparable model than a 5-Series Touring or E-Class estate but offering a similar blend of German engineering and kudos. The sloped rear tailgate doesn't make for quite as much load-space as in the E, but it's pretty large nonetheless.

The diesels are the most popular choices and thus fetch higher prices: unless you're doing a very high annual mileage, it might well work out cheaper long-term to opt for one of the less-loved petrol engines. Not the 300bhp 4.2 V8 quattro, though& the 2.4 (170bhp) and 2.7 (230bhp at first, then 250bhp) are good mid-way decisions.
