Jaguar X-Type 3.0 V6 manual, 2002, 70,000 miles, £5,000
Here, the choice should be between the BMW 3-Series or Audi A4. Unfortunately, you'll only find elderly or worn-out examples for less than £5,000, which we wouldn't recommend.
On the other hand, the Jaguar X-Type is a bit of a bargain. Instead of a 1998 German car, you can get a 2002 Jag - with a mileage that doesn't suggest space travel.
BMW M3
BMW M3 3.2 Evolution coupe, 1996, 84,000 miles, £4,750
OK, we couldn't resist it. The 321bhp M3 has serious performance, though it is worth seeking out the earlier, less powerful 286bhp 3.0-litre version for cheaper running costs and better reliability.
