Citroen C1 1.0i Vibe, 1,200 miles, £4,995
When it comes to tiny city cars, five grand should mean the world of pre-owned cars is your oyster: cars which were £6,000-£8,000 new are coming up for under £5,000 with very low mileages. Our choice would be the Citroen C1, or its Peugeot 107 and Toyota Aygo sister models (they're all built in the same factory).
Fiat Panda 1.1 Active, 0 miles, £4,995
Why settle for a second-hand car? We wouldn't advise that you go for the Perodua Kelisa (Britain's cheapest car at £4,862 on-the-road), as it's crude and unrefined with a low-rent interior, but shop around: besides pre-registered and dealer-demo cars on the franchise forecourts, there are independent agents and brokers who can negotiate big savings for you.
We like the Fiat Panda, available at savings of 30% from list price: it's modern, well-built and a good solution for urban driving.
