When launched in July 1999 the range consisted of the 318 Ci, 323 Ci and 328 Ci. The specification was decent enough, with sports suspension, 16" alloys, electric windows, mirrors and automatic air conditioning. There was also a full complement of electronic driver aids including CBC (Cornering Brake Control).
The 323 Ci benefited from electrically adjustable front seats, with memory on the driver's side. A 328 Ci had 17" alloys plus matt chrome interior trim and rain-sensing wipers, but didn't stay long in production as it was replaced by the 330 Ci in June 2000.
The whole engine range was revamped that year with a 2.2 six-cylinder fitted to the 320 Ci, and a new 325 Ci replacing the 323 Ci. The 330 six-cylinder models also became available with SE and Sport specifications, the latter adding lots of M3 style body and alloy wheel parts. In September 2001 the 318 Ci got an engine makeover as a more powerful 16-valve four was fitted.
In 2003 there was a revised front end and bonnet, and again loads of spec and engine developments. The 318 Ci could be had with ES, SE and Sport specifications. The 325 Ci was now available in SE and Sport trim but most significant of all was the introduction of 320 and 330 Cd diesels.
