In the '20s and '30s, Duesenberg built what many regarded as America's finest cars. This wild limousine was an attempt to revive the name, and had been preceded by a one-off coupe on a 1950 Packhard chassis which, presumably, had been its inspiration.
Designed by the former Chrysler stylist Virgil Exner the Duesenberg II was at the time said to be the largest 'production' car in the world with more head and legroom than any other American car, and the biggest boot too. The styling mixed old and new to produce a car that looked like something the Addams family should have driven around in. Ghia of Italy built the body, and Chrysler supplied the power, a 425bhp 7 litre V8. At $19,500 it came fully loaded with every extra imaginable back in 1966. Some say that only one was built, others that there were as many as 50. Either way, you are unlikely ever to lay eyes on a Duesenberg II.
