The VW Type-181 was a reborn wartime Kubelwagen as used by the German Army. It was based on the Beetle and, in the North America, was known as 'The Thing'. Unlike the original Kubelwagen it was only two-wheel drive, however, and with a top speed of 75 mph, it was as miserable to drive as any other Beetle. It was essentially a fun car for sunny climes, but the modern German army did actually use the Type-181 and it was produced in Germany until 1978, although production in Mexico and Indonesia went on for a further year. More than 90,000 were built, which makes this one of the most ubiquitous retro cars.
