Most top Italian politicians these days (the names change every week, so volatile are the politics) swan about in bulletproof, long-wheelbase Lancia Kappa saloons or 3.0-litre Alfa 166s. In the '70s the favourite was the Fiat 130 saloon - bulletproofed after the kidnapping of Aldo Moro. Maserati had its moment, however, when a Quattroporte was loaned to the government in the 1980s, and used by the president, Sandro Pertini. Enzo Ferrari was famously upset when Pertini used the huge, leather-lined Maserati (powered by a four-cam ex-racing-car V8) on a visit to the Ferrari factory at Maranello!
