The BX 4x4 was significant in that it brought the advantages of four-wheel drive to the affordable family car and didn't charge you much for it: the 4x4 was only £1,400 more than the front-wheel drive BX. Citroen engineers kept the costs down by dispensing with the expensive viscous coupling, using instead a epicyclic diff with a mechanical centre diff-lock to give permanent all-wheel drive. Teves ABS was optional on the BX, which handled and rode well and had a little extra power over and above the standard BX19 TRX. With its height adjustable suspension - which could give you up to eight inches of ground clearance - it was an ideal car for the farmer who wanted to cross the occasional snow-covered field in a car that was otherwise as refined as the standard model. Apart from some unpretentious badging, the 4x4 BX was outwardly identical to the standard car too.
