Another FF Developments project. Some 69 Senator four-wheel drive saloons were built in the '80s for the British Army in Berlin to use as reconnaissance or patrol cars in more rugged districts, and for sneaking over the border to see what the opposition were up to. You can see one in the Army museum in Chelsea, by the way. The American Army got to hear about the FF Senators and commissioned Tony Rolt to convert several big American Ford sedans.
A handful of Monzas were converted for civilian use, although at £5,500 for the work on top of a £12,000 showroom price it's easy to see why there were a limited number of takers. Enthusiasm nay also have been dented because adding 155 lbs to the weight of the car made the acceleration (even in the five-speed manual version) rather leisurely compared to the lively two-wheel drive model, which actually handled rather well anyway.
