One of the more implausible layouts for a hatchback: a rear engine under a separate boot. Nevertheless, an opening rear window and fold down seats mean the Imp qualifies as one of the first of the breed. The Imp symbolised Britain at its best and worst: fantastic components designed by racing car specialists working for bosses who couldn't manage their way out of a paper bag.

The all -aluminium engine came from Coventry Climax while the steering and suspension was sorted by racing ace Mike Parkes. Management was told it would be a great car when it was finished, but they decided to put it into production a year early anyway. The result was appalling unreliability (early ones made even the Mini look like a product of Mercedes) and an image that would have embarrassed Eastern bloc manufacturers.

The tragedy was that the Imp was a great car to drive - light, responsive and surprisingly refined. The alloy engine meant no Beetle-style oversteer frights, while the stalk-based controls were years ahead of the competition. That was no consolation to the company - slow sales and huge warranty claims resulted in Rootes (which then owned Hillman) selling out to Chrysler in 1964. Now there's a management who really didn't have a clue...
