The 504 Cabriolet and Coupe were the first cars to use the jointly-produced PRV (Peugeot-Renault-Volvo) 2.6-litre V6 engine, which transformed a plodding if refined car into quite a brisk one. Like the 504 saloon, the Coupe and Cabriolet were the work of Pininfarina, which also built the steel bodywork in its Turin factory. The shells were then sent over-land to Peugeot, which fitted the drivetrain.
The 504 Cabriolet was originally fitted with a four-cylinder injection engine and this model was reintroduced to run alongside the V6 when that car failed to sell in the numbers expected. Early 2.0-litre cars had four headlights; the V6 was distinguishable by long, one-piece headlights, flush door-handles, new bumper over-riders and one-piece backlights.
From 1978 there were colour-coded bumpers and, on the last cars, a veneer dashboard. Otherwise these cars, only built in left-hand drive, changed little in a long production run. Refined and comfortable, they are among the most stylish four-seater convertibles around, and much coveted.
