Nissan has given 4Car a preview of its Micra C+C convertible, which it will formally launch at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, with UK sales following in November. With a folding hard-top roof to give coupe-like cover in colder and wetter conditions, the Micra C+C will go head-to-head with the successful Peugeot 206 CC, Vauxhall Tigra, Mini Convertible and upcoming Mitsubishi Colt CZT cabriolet, as well as the smaller but sportier Daihatsu Copen. Prices haven't yet been confirmed, but Nissan assures us that the C+C will be very competitively priced from "under £14,000", or 16,000-17,000 euros (before taxes) in mainland Europe.

The C+C comes with either the 1.4-litre (88bhp) or the new 1.6-litre (110 bhp) petrol engines; there are no plans for a diesel version as yet. "Technically, diesel works", said Nissan Europe product manager Pierre Loing, "and we are looking at what is happening with the 206 CC. It looks as if it is a very French request." Under hard-nosed boss Carlos 'le cost-cutter' Ghosn, every new model has to come with a cast-iron guarantee that it will be profitable, but "from a business point of view, it is possible." Automatic transmission will be optional with the 1.4 engine.
